Between the 17-19th of September, 26 delegates from across Europe met to reflect on the activities and outcomes of the REFIT Project. The event involved presentations, discussion sessions and field trips and brought together farming, wildlife, heritage and community stakeholders from the 4 REFIT landscapes, as well as others working on similar projects elsewhere in Europe.

Led by the team from Durham University and held at the Royal Agricultural University in Cirencester, the workshop aimed to address the successes and challenges faced in the co-production of landscape management. While the event highlighted how the interdisciplinary partnerships, free resources and engagement events fostered through the REFIT Project have clearly made a great start in the case study landscapes, there is still a lot to be done. From grass-roots initiatives to government policy it remains an exciting challenge to embed co-production in landscape management and try to unite both natural and cultural capital in future initiatives. Nonetheless, it is clear that an ecosystems services approach has a lot to offer and that a conceptual shift is taking place across disciplines and interest groups.

In the final phase of the REFIT Project, we will work on an edited volume which will highlight the positive messages and methodologies brought to bear through the research. We hope that the publication, alongside continued use of our public resources, will further promote the importance of active and collaborative management to help shape the cultural landscapes we want to see in the future.

Evaluando éxitos y desafíos: el workshop final del proyecto REFIT
Entre los días 17-19 de septiembre, 26 delegados de toda Europa se reunieron para reflexionar sobre las actividades y los resultados del proyecto REFIT. El evento incluyó presentaciones, sesiones de discusión y excursiones y reunió a personas relacionadas con la agricultura, la flora y fauna, el patrimonio y las comunidades de los cuatro paisajes REFIT, así como otras trabajando en proyectos similares en otras partes de Europa.
Dirigido por el equipo de la Durham University y celebrado en la Royal Agricultural University en Cirencester, el workshop tuvo como objetivo abordar los éxitos y desafíos en la coproducción de la gestión del paisaje. Si bien el evento recalcó cómo el trabajo interdisciplinario, los recursos gratuitos y los eventos de implicación promovidos a través del proyecto REFIT han supuesto un gran comienzo en los paisajes objeto de estudio, aún queda mucho por hacer. Desde las iniciativas de base hasta la política gubernamental, sigue siendo un desafío emocionante integrar la coproducción en la gestión del paisaje e intentar unir tanto el capital natural como el cultural en iniciativas futuras. Sin embargo, es evidente que un “enfoque de servicios del ecosistema” tiene mucho que ofrecer y que un cambio conceptual está teniendo lugar entre diferentes disciplinas y grupos de interés.
En la fase final del proyecto REFIT trabajaremos en un volumen editado que resaltará los mensajes y las metodologías aplicadas en la investigación. Esperamos que la publicación, junto con el uso continuado de nuestros recursos, fomente aún más la importancia de una gestión activa y colaborativa que ayude a dar forma a los paisajes culturales que queremos ver en el futuro.
